Square footage plus waste and number of boxes for tile, laminate, vinyl plank or hardwood.

Formula

Area = L × W; to buy = area × (1 + waste%); boxes = to buy ÷ coverage per box.

Worked example

Inputs: Room length = 14 ft; Room width = 12 ft; Waste allowance (more for diagonal layouts) = 10 %; Coverage per box (on the box) = 20 sq ft.

FAQ

How much waste for tile?

It depends on layout and cuts; diagonal and herringbone patterns need more than straight lay. Adjust the percentage to your installer's guidance.
